4 Discipleship Activities To Help You Grow Your Students

Our annual discipleship strategy is based on four spiritual habits: Spending Time with God, Spending Time with Others, Using Your Gifts, and Sharing Your Story. This strategy influences our curriculum and teaching strategy, but it’s much bigger than just sermons because, as you’ve probably realized, even the best sermons in the world aren’t quite enough to ensure that teenagers are being discipled.

QUARTERLY GROWTH SURVEYS

It’s not always easy to know when all of your discipleship efforts are working, so these quarterly surveys are designed to help you better understand how well your students are practicing the four spiritual habits you emphasize each year so you can learn how to lead them more effectively. Each quarter, give your students one of these anonymous surveys. And hang onto their responses so you can compare them year after year.

SMALL GROUP CONVERSATION STARTERS

THIS QUARTER’S SPIRITUAL HABIT: SPENDING TIME WITH OTHERS
(Recommended For The Fall)

To kick off the school year, give your students and volunteers a big selection of “choose your own adventure” conversation starters, sorted by topic. Each topic (like trust, self-harm, rumors, worry, or friendship) comes with a set of discussion questions and either an illustration or activity, designed to help groups get to know each other and have honest conversation about the things that matter to them. NOTE: Try launching this activity during our August series on friendship, Lifelines!

CHRISTMAS FUNDRAISING CAMPAIGN

THIS QUARTER’S SPIRITUAL HABIT: USING YOUR GIFTS
(Recommended For The Winter)

This holiday season, give your students a chance to love, serve, and advocate for others by challenging them to participate in a Christmas fundraising campaign. But this isn’t your average fundraiser — this one involves fun, food, dance battles, crazy costumes, and lots more. NOTE: Try launching this activity during our November series about loving others, Us for Them!

40-DAY EASTER DEVOTIONAL

THIS QUARTER’S SPIRITUAL HABIT: SPENDING TIME WITH GOD
(Recommended For The Spring)

In the 40 days leading up to Easter, encourage your students to get serious about spending intentional time with God with this devotional. We’ve given you 40 days of content to align with the season of Lent, but if your students are new to the concept of Lent, we’ve also given you a second version of the devotional that helps them prepare for and understand this season. NOTE: Try launching this activity during our February series about spiritual habits, Choose Your Own Adventure!

THE GO, GROW, GLOW CHALLENGE

THIS QUARTER’S SPIRITUAL HABIT: SHARING YOUR STORY
(Recommended For The Summer)

This summer, challenge your students to join Jesus on God’s mission to share the good news with others. This activity will guide students through the process of identifying people they want to share the love of Jesus with, planning how to best care for the people they’ve identified, and then turning those plans into practical action steps. This activity can be done individually or in small groups. NOTE: Try launching this activity during our July series on evangelism, Mission: Possible!
